Visionaries

Rick Staas

President/CEO

“As I looked through the historical records from the past 79 years, I was and still am in awe of the foresight of the thirty men who founded this company in 1940. The continued success of the San Joaquin Valley Hay Growers Association is a great tribute to the uncanny vision these individuals had at a very uncertain time for themselves and other alfalfa growers. Somehow they saw something that no one else did and joined forces to create an organization that grew quickly and has remained the marketing leader in the California alfalfa industry since its inception.

Having been with this company for 37 years, I have been around long enough to have experienced many ups and downs for our growers, but somehow I don’t think I have walked in their boots. After combing through decades of company literature, I am amazed at the many obstacles and setbacks that were overcome in the early years of this association. Yes, our industry is presently awash in overregulation and buried in paperwork, but somehow I think it is still easier to be a hay grower and hay seller today than it was in the forties and fifties. I believe this is due in large part to those founding members who saw something that many of us would have never seen.

This association has not only survived but also prospered on the basic principles set forth in 1940, and those principles in the form of our bylaws and marketing agreement have remained basically unchanged for 79 years. Many of our current members are related to our founders and should be very proud of their ancestors for establishing this cooperative and providing them and all hay growers with the opportunity to be a part of the largest and most successful hay marketing cooperative in the world.”
